Wills & Family
Who should I choose as executor if I don’t trust my family?
Not everyone has a relative they would trust to handle their estate. Here is how to think about other options, from friends to professional executors.

Property, beneficiaries, Inheritance Tax and reviewing your plans.
Estate planning means organising your affairs so that your wishes are clear if you become unable to manage them, and when you die. It often includes a Will, Lasting Powers of Attorney, and thinking about property, pensions, Inheritance Tax and, sometimes, trusts.
Inheritance Tax is a tax on the estate of someone who has died, and on some gifts made in the years before death. At the time of writing, the standard rate is 40% on the value above the £325,000 nil-rate band, though exemptions and reliefs mean many estates pay none.
How you own your home can decide who inherits it. Joint tenants’ shares pass automatically to the surviving owner, while tenants in common can each leave their share by Will.
Business owners often need to think about who will run or inherit the business, how business shares are dealt with under company documents, and how Inheritance Tax reliefs may apply. Rules on business and agricultural property relief changed from 6 April 2026.
Life events such as marriage, divorce, a new child, a death in the family or a house move can change what happens to your estate, sometimes automatically. Reviewing your Will, LPAs, nominations and property ownership helps keep your plans in line with your wishes.
